INTRODUCTION
I wrote this file after seeing an episode of America's Most Wanted in which
they were looking for a guy who plants bombs that look like a child's prank.
This guy makes a bomb that looks like a couple of 2x4s glued together, one
on top of the other, with the top 2x4 protruding nails from it. It looks
very much like a nasty prank to pop the tires of cars that run over it. Its
made to lure people into picking it up and moving it. If the device is
titlted when it is picked up or moved it explodes.
This file is one possible configuration of this bombs. It explains in
detail how it works and discusses how it is made.

Explosives Expert and not qualified to write explosive instructionals. No
attempt should be made to construct the device discussed in this file.
BASIC OPERATION
Basically the bomb works like this. It appears to be some sort of child's
prank created to puncture tire. In fact it is only made to look like that so
that it will be picked up.

While flat on the ground (like this __) the device is harmless, but when
picked up and tilted toward vertical (like this / or this |) a MERCURY
SWITCH (or like concept contact switch) makes an electrical contact and a 9
VOLT BATTERY ignites a ROCKET IGNITOR, which detonates a PIPE BOMB and BOOM!

NOTES ON DIAGRAM 2.
There are five primary components to this diagram
1. Pipe Bomb.
2. Rocket Ignitor
3. Mercury Switch
4. 9 Volt Battery
5. Electrical Wiring
PIPE BOMB. The Pipe Bomb consists of a 4 to 8 in length of lead plumbing
pipe, threaded on either end. On one end of the pipe, a fitted block cap is
screwed on. The pipe is then filled to capacity with Pyrodex or other brand
FFFF Grade gun powder. Next a modified cap (more on this in Ignitor section)
is VERY CAREFULLY screwed on, so as not to accidentally ignite any gun
powder that may have found its way into the threads.
ROCKET ENGINE IGNITOR. The Rocket Ignitor, in its simplest form is an Estes
Rocket, D Engine or better rocket engine ignitor. This ignitor is fitted
into a drilled pipe end cap. It is fitted in such a way that 1. the ignition
end of the ignitor is well within contact of the gun powder when the cap is
screwed onto the iron pipe and 2. the electrical lead end of the ignitor
sticks stick out sufficiently enough so that they may be TWIST CONNECTED to
the positive and negative electrical runs. *IMPORTANT* The ignitors leads
MUST BE PROPERLY INSULATED AGAINST ACCIDENTAL CONTACT. This can be achieved
by dipping the lead end of the ignitor into Rubber Kote or some other brand
of OSHA approved insulating coating liquid. Only enough lead of the ignitor
should be exposed to make a twist connection to the positive and negative
wiring, and once these twist connections are made they MUST be wrapped with
electrical tape.

MERCURY SWITCH. The switch is what will be triggered when the position of
the bomb switches from horizontal to vertical. The switches placement in the
wood is VERY important. Because the diagram maybe somewhat deceiving, I will
clarify. The switch is to be vertical when placed in the hole drilled in the
2x4 (See Diagram 3.). In its vertical position, with the bomb flat on the
ground the mercury will be at the bottom of the switch bulb, out of contact
from the mercury. When the bomb is tilted to a position of near vertical or
vertical, the switch will then be in a horizontal position thereby bringing
the mercury in the bulb into contact with the internal switch leads which
then results in an electrical contact being made. More on switch placement
in the Routing Diagram section.
9 VOLT BATTERY. The positive and negative leads coming from the positive and
negative posts should be presoldered before ANY connections are made. The
wires should be a color corresponding to the positive and negative runs
(i.e. black and red).
WIRING. All wiring of bomb, expect for the pre-soldering of the 9 Volt
should be done AFTER placement into Routed 2x4. Once all components have
been placed into 2x4 a RED wire should run from the positive of the 9-Volt
to one of the ignitor leads, twist tied (not soldered) and insulated with
electrical tape. Next a length of BLACK wire should be twist tied and
insulated to the other lead of the ignitor. ONLY AFTER the Mercury Switch is
properly inserted VERTICALLY into the 2x4 should you run the negative
(BLACK) length of wire from the ignitor to one lead of the switch. Another
length of BLACK wire should run from the other lead of the switch to the
negative lead of the battery.
** NOTE * AT THIS POINT THE BOMB IS ACTIVATED!!! **

NOTES ON DIAGRAM 3.
Most routing is done either with a router or a chisel. Routing should as
closely as possible approximate the dimensions of the components to be
fitted with in the routed out area.
* NOTE * The hole shown in this routing diagram is where the Mercury Switch
should be inserted. This is a hole drilled into the 2x4 about .5" deep. As
well, the diameter of the hole would as closely as possible approximate the
diameter if the switch. NO LEEWAY SHOULD BE TOLERATED.

NOTES ON DIAGRAM 4.
This length of 2x4 goes nails up, ON TOP of the routed piece of 2x4 in which
the bomb is placed. This piece of wood should be attached to the routed
piece of wood with Liquid Nails, or some other brand of caulk adhesive.
FINAL CONSTRUCTION OVERVIEW
This is a brief recap of what was already discussed and a few more final
construction notes. It is assumed that all pre-work (i.e. routing, wire
cutting/stripping, pipe bomb construction etc.) has been completed.
1. Place all components of bomb into their routed positions in base 2x4.
(See Diagram 3.)
2. Make electrical connections as decscribed in Electrical Wiring
description of Diagram 2 section.
** IMPORTANT!!! ** From this point forward the bomb is activated and
must be handled carefully! BOMB MUST BE KEPT HORIZONTAL!!! IF TILTED
DEVICE WILL DETONATE!!!
3. Generously apply caulk to base 2x4 and then place decoy 2x4 (the one with
nails protruding) on top.
Bomb is now complete and can be placed in street, parking lot, driveway, or
wherever it is likely to be moved by human hands.
